In his final moment of "awakening," Elias stops looking at the Guests and starts looking at the bottom of his world. He realizes that if the subtitles stop, his existence ends.

His name is Elias. He is a minor character, a shopkeeper in Sweetwater. Every day, he speaks his scripted lines: "Fine weather we're having, friend." But in the corner of his eye, he sees the glowing white text appearing before he even finishes his thought.

During a violent raid on the town, he sees a line of text that isn't dialogue. It is a descriptive subtitle in brackets: [Elias realizes the truth]
