The story follows , a solitary and irritable janitor living in Boston. After the sudden death of his older brother, Joe, Lee reluctantly returns to his hometown of Manchester-by-the-Sea. He is shocked to learn that Joe's will names him the sole legal guardian of his 16-year-old nephew, Patrick .
Returning to the town reopens a devastating personal tragedy from Lee's past involving his ex-wife, Randi, and the loss of his own children—a past that initially forced him into self-imposed exile.
