Before they were Golden Girls , Rue McClanahan starred as the spinster sister Fran Crowley, and Betty White made recurring appearances as the snobbish, social-climbing daughter Ellen.

The debut season finds the sharp-tongued, blue-haired matriarch (played by Vicki Lawrence, who was only 33 at the time) living in Raytown with her uptight sister, Fran. The peace is shattered when her dim-witted son, Vinton, moves back home after his wife leaves him, bringing along his two teenage children, Buzz and Sonja. The family dynamic further shifts when Vinton begins a flirtatious relationship with the next-door neighbor, Naomi Oates, whom they eventually marry later in the season.
