Ad Downloaded - File

Elias looked up at the corner of his room. There was no camera—only a spiderweb and a faint layer of dust. He looked back at the screen. In the video, a figure was now standing directly behind him. It was tall, blurred at the edges like a low-resolution ghost, holding a finger to its non-existent lips.

As the number began to tick down rapidly, Elias realized the "Ad" hadn't downloaded a file into his phone. It had downloaded him into the network. Outside, the real world began to pixelate, the sky turning that same bruised violet. Ad downloaded file

The video wasn’t an advertisement for a product. It was a fixed-angle shot of his own bedroom, taken from the corner where his ceiling fan met the wall. In the footage, Elias saw himself sitting on the edge of his bed, staring at his phone in real-time. Elias looked up at the corner of his room

Elias hadn’t clicked anything. He had been doom-scrolling through a news aggregator when his phone stuttered, the screen turning a bruised shade of violet before returning to normal. He tried to delete the file, but the "Trash" icon remained grayed out. The file had no size—0 KB—yet it sat in his storage like a lead weight. He tapped it. In the video, a figure was now standing directly behind him

He froze. In the video, the digital version of himself froze too.

A line of text crawled across the bottom of the screen in the familiar, cheerful font of a targeted ad: “Are you tired of being watched? Upgrade to Premium for Privacy.”

His thumb hovered over the "Upgrade" button that had appeared. The price wasn't listed in dollars. It was a countdown of his remaining heartbeats.
